St. Louis Area Large and Small Schools Boys Basketball 1/17/2018

I took a look at week seven of the Post Dispatch Large and Small Boys High School basketball rankings and have posted my rankings with the paper's rankings.  It is interesting to see how many good teams are missing from the P-D ranks and how many that don't deserve consideration are in their top 10 or 20.

First of all, Webster Groves deserves #1 ranking, hands down.  After struggling without Courtney Ramey, the team is clicking on all cylinders and recently playing Oak Hill Academy Virginia, a top national team, to the wire.   Chaminade, Belleville West and Hazelwood Central are all top five teams but Francis Howell, Marquette and Hillsboro are all under-rated by P-D.  On the other hand, Fort Zumwalt South, Hazelwood East and Alton Illinois are, at best top 30 teams, with a number of unranked teams performing much better than those three.

When I calculate team strengths, it is based on a weighted algorithm that takes into account, key wins against strong teams when at full strength.  A team like Eureka, for instance, lost Gunnar Herbert, a key guard and tough-nosed leader of the Wildcats, and then was upset by Troy and Duschesne.  Still understrength, they played Kirkwood to two overtimes before losing by a point.  At full strength, a team like St. Mary's would never lose to Duchesne either.

The small school P-D rankings are more to form with my algorithm, but Pacific and Soldan should be top ten teams.  In fact, I have a hard time understanding how some teams are considered large schools and some small schools when compared with the Missouri class designations.
