I spent my idle time calculating a "Sagarin" ranking for over 4000 eighth grade teams around the US last year, based upon head-to-head competition and score comparisons.
With these young men competing at the high school level this school year, I am wasting my evenings pulling together high school scores from the St. Louis Post Dispatch for eastern Missouri and southwest Illinois. Cross state rivalries allow me to get many of the Missouri and Illinois teams over time. It's early in the year so some of my initial estimates are based upon past year results. As more scores come in, the rankings will become more meaningful.
With that caveat, I will publish my early season rankings, knowing that some of these teams will be unfairly rated too low or too high. The proof-in-the-pudding will be the results as they move from the holiday tournaments into their conference schedules and post-season.
